I think you can join every race apart from the events which take place at the Rockingham track.

To join you just have to join the server on time. You can find the password for the server below this chatbox.

Good luck!

Survival at Fern Bay Gold
youliftyoulose, Tuesday, August 20 2013 - 04:43:17 // comment: 2

Race 5 of the GT2 Summer races of Absolute Beginners race took place at Fern Bay Gold in the reverse direction. The usual small group of summer drivers came out to qualify. Rookie Matiss had the fastest time with a 1:17.45. Antti was the only other driver to get into the 1:17’s displacing Mazdarati from the front row of the grid for the short 5 lap qualifying race.

Daniel is one of the first to end his race in the unforgiving chicane.

Kelle in a tight squeeze is about to put all 4 wheels in the air.

Gutholz seems to find the same bump that Daniel did earlier in the race.

Michal showing the signs of earlier shunts finally put his car on its roof.

Toberkel was one of the few cars that went over with a little help from another car.

After a hard fought win Mazdarati has enough of a gap to lay down what is left of his rear tires on the tarmac.

Matiss, who had the fastest qualifying time had to start from the back of the grid because he did not pass tech inspection as his car was too light.

As the qualifying race got underway, Black and Michal tried to go through T1 together. Daniel following close behind did not check up in time and helped Black get sideways. Several cars took advantage of the mishap and Black and Daniel fell back to P9 and P11 respectively.

Blacks’ troubles were not over as he came upon Michal coming of a trip in the grass at the final chicane. In a quick decision he avoided Michal only ending up going through the tire barrier. Kelle, unfortunately coming upon the blocked track in his efforts to miss Black and Michal put his car on its roof, By the time Black got going again he was back in P13.

Just up ahead Gutholz and BaronRojo made contact with BaronRojo taking a trip through the gravel on the final turn.

Michal and torberkel made contact at the end of the straight with both cars ending up against the wall and on the grass.

On the final lap torberkel lost control before the final chicane and ended up on the grass. Gutholz, who was following close behind, was distracted by the sideways car and proceeded to flip his car on its roof.

As the cars came across the finish line, Mazdarati was 1st with Veliko close behind. If the short qualifying race was any indication for the main race there would be a number of DNF’s coming up.

The main race was not only going to me a difficult one for keeping the car on all 4 tires but also for a pit strategy regarding what tire compound to use. Practice had proved very hard on R2’s and most drivers had a hard time getting the minimum 5 laps out of the softer rubber. As it turned out, Camoradi (3rd) was the only car of the top 5 had started with a set of R2’s on his front with the other 4 cars having at least R3’s or better.

Lap 1 almost went off without incident had Camoradi not got his left tires on the grass just before the final turn. The slight error was unforgiving and he did a 360 as he crossed the track and ended up on the grass against the wall. After watching most of the field go by he returned to the track in P15.

Halfway through lap 3 Daniel’s set of R2’s were beginning to heat up. A small mistake by running wide onto the grass was all that Black needed to take over P5. At the end of lap 4 Daniel was trying to stay in touch with Black. As Black went through the final chicane he ran wide and went onto the grass. Daniel, being to focused on the back of Blacks’ car foolishly followed him onto the grass. Black, however, managed to keep his car under control while Daniel let the mistake get the better of him and he spun his car around in the same spot Camoradi had on lap 1. By the time Daniel got going again he was back in P14. While the spin was a small disaster, worse problems lay ahead for the tortoise.

Camoradi, Lambat, Black, Daniel, w340, Antti and Xnyle all made their pit stop on lap 5. All drivers put on harder compound tires except for Xnyle and Antti, a decision that would haunt both drivers for the rest of the race. Fittingly, they would battle each other for several laps for P11 and P12 as they melted their rear R2’s.

Up at the front Mazdarati was hanging on to a small lead over 2nd place Veliko. Matiss, who showed he had a fast car in qualifying, had worked his way through the field and was now pressing Veliko. As small wobble on final turn of lap 6 and Matiss moved into P2 and set his eyes on the leader.

On lap 16 Daniel lost focus and took the last chicane just a little bit wrong. Wrong enough, however, to put the tortoise on its shell and have to be dragged back to the pits only to re-start 17 laps down. Given the dangerous combo and the small field, even coming last might deliver some good points.

On lap 18, Michal, who had put his car on two wheels more than once finally flipped his car right over. He was lucky as the car landed on all 4 wheels and he was able to continue, surprisingly with minimal damage.

As the race approached the halfway mark Mazdarati was having his mirrors filled with Matiss’ car. At the end of lap 20, Mazdarati, lost his normal driving line while avoiding a spinning Xnyle, allowed Matiss to take advantage and make the pass for P1 going into the final turn. Xnyle, with his tires on fire, made a hasty pit stop to get some fresh rubber. Unfortunately his pit crew was not ready for him and he had to make another lap and pit again.

On lap 26 Gutholz got the last chicane wrong and put his car on its roof. With the race more than half over he decided to retire.

The race at the front was riveting. Mazdarati and Matiss were setting a blistering pace. By the time lap 30 rolled around, Matiss was hanging on to a slim margin of 3 seconds. At the end of lap 31, Matiss decided it was time to make his pit stop. He changed only his front tires and put on some new R2’s. As he returned to racing he found himself in P3. Would Mazdarati be able to put in enough fast laps to pit and come out in front?

On lap 34, BaronRojo helped toberkel over on his roof as they were fighting for P11 and P12.

On lap 35, the luck ran out for Michal as he turned his car over and this time it remained with all wheels in the air, sending him into retirement.

Veliko made his pit stop on lap 39 and relinquished P2 to Matiss. He left the pits and picked up 3rd position.

As Mazdarti headed for the pits on lap 40, his lead over Matiss was just over 32 seconds. Had he done enough to come out in the lead. A quick call to his pits letting them know he needed to shorten his stop if at all possible. While the original plan was to change all 4 tires, Mazdarati made the call to only change the fronts and hope that the worn out rears would get him to the end of the race. The gamble paid off as he left the pits he had a comfortable lead of just over 6 seconds. As long as those rears would hold up the win should be his.

As the race came to a close, Mazdarati kept the lead and crossed the finish line 1st with Matiss a strong 2nd. Both cars had their front tires on fire as they finished the race. Veliko took 3rd as he was gaining on the leaders quickly but ran out of laps.

Xnyle dragged his car across the finish line with a melted left rear. The only thing that brought a smile to his face was the fact that the race was over. In spite of his difficult race he still managed to increase his lead on Daniel for 3rd in the championship.

Honorable mention to Bingo Wings as one of his best finishes ever and also driving the only XRR besides THR.

See you next week at Kyoto as we conclude the summer races with the GT2 cars. Remember to check the standings for your weight restrictions for the next race.
